Creating a Digital Twin with the Captions App: How it Works and What You Need to Know
Have you created a digital twin yet? It's a virtual copy of you, made with AI, that can mimic your voice, expressions, and movements. And... you can make it in a few steps, using just your phone. I’ll walk you through how to create your own digital twin using the app, Captions. Watch the video to see me create my own digital twin, step by step!
-
Getting Started with Captions
The Captions app is a paid app, but once you download and open it, creating your digital twin is straightforward. Start by tapping on “Create” and then selecting “AI Twin.” The app will prompt you to calibrate by scanning your face and voice. -
Face Calibration
To create an accurate digital twin, make sure you’re in a well-lit space and directly face the camera. Captions will ask you to make certain movements so it can capture a range of expressions. This is a crucial part of the process because it helps the app learn how you move, smile, and react. -
Voice Calibration
The app will then prompt you to record a clip lasting about a minute. Here, it’s essential to use a variety of expressions, tones, and inflections. Speak clearly and with emotion, as the app uses this sample to understand your unique tone and manner of speaking. -
Final Steps
After these two calibrations, the app generates your digital twin. Now, you can type any text you want, and your digital twin will say it, using your own face and voice. The result is surprisingly realistic ( though not yet perfect!)
Personally, I was shocked at how fast and far this technology has come, especially considering you can make it from a mobile app. Setting it up only takes a few minutes, and it’s simple enough that even a 12-year-old could do it!
While it’s impressive, there’s still room for improvement; for example, my movements didn’t look entirely natural, and when I showed my digital twin to my husband and kids, they thought it didn’t quite capture “me.” But, when I posted it online, I received a ton of 'ooohs' and 'aaahs', so people who don’t know me personally seem to have found it quite convincing.
Important Note on Privacy
Now, before you dive into this or any similar technology, make sure to be careful. Recording your face and voice into a third-party application has potential privacy implications. Ofcourse I’ve reviewed the Captions app’s privacy policy and it looked ok to me, so I felt comfortable proceeding, but I’m not a privacy expert. Always consider the potential risks before creating your own digital twin, and make your own wise decisions ;)
Will everyone have a digital twin?
It’s crazy to think that when I was growing up, video was always real. If you had it on video, it had to be real! But, our children’s generation will grow up with a different experience, learning to question whether video content is real or AI-generated. And they'll probably grow up with their own digital twins.
So...what does this mean? Will we all have a digital twin in the future? Is this something to be excited about, or scared for? I'm leaning towards excited! You?
More digital twin tools?
With technology advancing so rapidly, 2025 promises even more breakthroughs. If you’ve tried creating a digital twin or know of any other tools that can do this, let me know in the comments! I’d love to hear your experiences.
